Use Flats               Use Sharps

Instructions

You can make your own moveable diagrams for chords or scales using this page. Simply click between any two frets and that spot will be marked. The interval name will show up.

This can be very useful for identifying the individual intervals of chords, finding octaves, finding extensions to chords, or locating different inversions. If you point at a blank spot on the fretboard, a tooltip will pop up showing the name (or names) of the interval that goes on that spot (Internet Explorer only).

For a further explanation on the usage of "moveable" charts, check out the Interval Finder page. That page also contains formulas for all the most commonly used chords and scales.

Sharps or Flats

You can choose whether to use sharp names or flat names. Each sharp note has an equivalent flat name, and vice versa. For instance, the note between 2 and 3 can be called #2 or b3. You choose which you want. You can also change this choice at any time without affecting what you've already put on the diagram. Normally, though, you'll never see sharps and flats together in any single chord or scale.

Clearing the marks

If you click on a spot that is already marked, it will clear the mark. So, if you make any mistakes, just click the spot again to clear it. You can clear the entire fretboard by refreshing the page (click the Refresh button on your browser).

Saving your diagram

Once you've made a diagram you are happy with and you want to save it, you can use a screen capture program. You can find many freeware screen capture programs at Download.com.

Alternately, you can use Windows built-in Print Screen feature to save the entire screen to the clipboard for pasting into a graphic application. The drawback is that this places a copy of the entire screen in the clipboard (including the browser window frame!). You would then have to use a graphic program to crop the image down to just the fretboard.

Want to make non-moveable charts?

If you want to make charts that apply directly to the guitar and are not moveable, go to my regular Chart Maker page. There you'll find a blank fretboard with a "nut" at the top and fret indications. When you place notes, they will show up with the actual note name as it appears on your guitar. This would also be useful to help you identify what notes you're actually using in chords and scales.
